## Re-Cone It – Don't Replace It
A torn cone or perished foam surround doesn't mean the driver is finished. If
the magnet, frame and voice coil are still healthy, a new cone assembly brings
the speaker back to life for a fraction of the cost of a replacement – and
often sounds better than the tired original.
This 5 inch cone comes as a ready-to-fit assembly: a lightweight paper cone
body with the foam surround already bonded to it, waiting for your voice coil
and spider.
### What You're Getting
**Paper cone body**
The classic choice for a reason. Paper is light, well-damped and naturally
breaks up smoothly, which is why it still shows up in plenty of hi-fi and
vintage drivers. It takes glue well and sands flat if you need to dress the
edge.
**Foam surround**
Flexible foam edge gives the cone a long, linear throw and plenty of travel
down low. Softer than a rubber surround, so the moving mass stays down.
**Ready to recone**
Centre hole is open at 26.5mm to take your voice coil former, so you can glue
the coil in and align it the way you want.
### Dimensions
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Nominal size | 5 inch (127mm) |
| Outside diameter (OD) | 128 mm ±2mm |
| Cone opening / inner step diameter | 115 mm ±2mm |
| Depth (cone height) | 27 mm ±1mm |
| Centre hole diameter | 26.5 mm ±1mm |
| Cone material | Paper |
| Surround material | Foam |
| Application | Woofer / mid-bass recone and surround repair |
*Measure with callipers before ordering. Tolerances are listed above – a part
that reads 126 mm or 130 mm is within spec.*
### Before You Order – Measure Twice
1. **OD** sits at 128mm. It must clear the frame's inner lip and the screw
holes of your basket.
2. **Centre hole at 26.5mm** is the critical one. Measure your voice coil
former's outer diameter – it should be a close slip fit. Too loose and the
cone won't self-centre while the glue sets.
3. **Depth 27mm** determines how the cone sits against the basket and whether
the dust cap clears the pole piece.
4. If your old cone measured differently, do not force this one in.
### Fitting Notes
1. Remove the old cone and clean the basket and voice coil former thoroughly.
2. Dry-fit the new cone to check the coil centres in the gap without rubbing.
3. Apply a thin, even bead of adhesive where the foam surround meets the
frame, and around the coil former at the centre hole.
4. Let it cure fully before applying any signal.
### FAQ
**Does this include a voice coil, spider or dust cap?**
No – this listing is for the paper cone with foam surround only. Check the
variant images before ordering.
**Will it fit my speaker?**
Fit is set by dimensions, not brand. Match the OD, centre hole and depth
against your old cone and you'll be fine.
**Paper or poly – which should I choose?**
Paper is lighter and better damped, and it's the original sound in most
vintage drivers. If you want the driver to sound as it did, stay with paper.
**Can I paint the cone?**
Yes, but keep it thin. Use a light mist coat so you don't add moving mass or
stiffen the paper.
